COSTA RICA IS NOW PART OF THE RECOGNITION PROCESS OF SANITARY REGISTRATIONS FOR FOODS AND BEVERAGES GRANTED IN CENTRAL AMERICA

In the Official Gazette printed on July 2, 2012, Costa Rica enforced the provisions of Resolution No. 269-2011 (COMIECO-LXI) issued by the Council of Ministers of Economic Integration, named “Procedure for Recognition of Sanitary Registration for processed food and beverage products made in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica “. The recognition process was in force for several years in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala but now, Costa Rica is part of the system and this will make the registration procedures for foods and beverages much simpler.

The new procedure enables each member to accept that foods or beverages with a valid sanitary registration from a Central American country could be marketed within any of the States with the registration number issued in the country of origin, eliminating the need for registration in each of the States.

Among other requisites, the procedure will take place with the filing of an application and it is mandatory to file the Certificate of Free Sale (CFS) from the country of origin. The application will contain the information of the product and the name of a local distributor and responsible for the registrations in the country. Additionally, the validity of the registration will be the same as in the country of origin and the renewal procedure will be adjusted to this recognition system.
